See Big Country in concert for a tenner

Big Country: 10 squid and they’re yours

Big Country play The Forum in London on June 2 – and you can see them there for just £10.

The Scottish legends – now featuring Alarm man Mike Peters on vocals – are currently touring Europe in support of their recently released album The Journey.

The dates culminate with a Sunday-night show at The Forum – and tickets to see them there would normally cost £23.50. But we at Classic Rock have managed to negotiate a special discounted rate of just £10 per ticket (£11.50 including fees).

This will be the last chance to see Big Country in the UK before they head for a three-month tour of North America.

Click here to take advantage of this cut-price offer. But hurry – there are only a limited number of tickets available at the £10 price.

Big Country frontman Mike Peters was faced with the challenge of creating lyrics that matched the spirit of late founder Stuart Adamson when it came to writing for The Journey. The full story is here.

Why Coverdale won’t follow you on Twitter

David Coverdale of Whitesnake

Net gain: Coverdale

Whitesnake mainman David Coverdale has notched up nearly 20,000 followers since joining Twitter in January – but he’s not following anyone back.

Appearing on the BBC Breakfast show this morning, he revealed he wants to keep it that way.

Coverdale said: “I have a bet going to see how far I can go with that. A lot of people I know are furious but I go, ‘No, I don’t have time – sorry!’ For me it’s an extraordinary opportunity to interact with the people who support my work, and that’s been impossible for most of the time.”

Whitesnake are preparing to tour the UK and Ireland with Journey and Thunder – and the singer vowed fans would get their money’s worth, insisting he still loves playing the band’s classic tracks.

“It’s impossible not to when you’re playing in front of appreciative crowds,” he explained. “We’re blessed with the Whitesnake choir – they do half my work for me. It’s a beautiful experience.”

And while he admitted he’s done some damage to his hearing over the years, he added there were no plans to turn the volume down.

“My ears are not bad – they could be a lot worse. I look upon it as a trade-off. There is hearing loss, of course, but it’s got to be all-embracing to me. We’re not loud to disguise anything; it’s just very powerful stuff.”

Meanwhile, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has revealed they’re aiming to deliver an “edgier” set to fit in alongside Whitesnake and Thunder. And while they struggle to fit everything into their set, there will always be room for Don’t Stop Believin.’

Cain told Metal Express Radio: “The song just keeps reincarnating in a different way, whether it’s on The Sopranos, Glee, Rock Of Ages and even the UK’s X-Factor. Songs are like your kids – some are successful and some just do okay; but Don`t Stop Believin’ made it to the very top. It’s one of the most downloaded songs of all time.”

Sabbath doubted Ward could keep up

black sabbath

Had to ask: Iommi, Osbourne and Butler

Ozzy Osbourne says he, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler doubted that Bill Ward could play his full part in the Black Sabbath reunion.

And the singer has suggested that there was more to the drummer’s lack of involvement than a straightforward contract argument, observing that the drummer “can’t be surprised that he didn’t get the gig.”

Ward bowed out soon after the metal giants announced they’d be making a new album together. The project has continued without him and 13 – featuring Rage Against The Machine’s Brad Wilk behind the kit – is released on June 10.

Osbourne accepts part of Ward’s reason for declining to take part was indeed contractual: in 2012 he said he hadn’t been offered a deal he regarded as “signable.”

But the frontman tells Mojo, via Blabbermouth: “There was also another side to it. When Bill came along, we all had to ask, ‘Can he do an hour-and-a-half, two-hour gig? Can he cope?’

“My suggestion was that we run through a set and see how he got on. He was so out of condition – and the drummer is the most demanding job in the whole band.

“Bill couldn’t remember what the fuck we were doing. You know them yellow stick-on memo notes? He had them all over his fucking drums. I was like, ‘What the fuck’s that for, Bill?’ He said, ‘I can’t remember what I’m doing.’

“I go, ‘How are you gonna remember out of those 500,000 bits of paper stuck all over your kit, which one you’re looking at, Bill?’ ‘I’ll know.’ ‘Ah, okay – great.’”

Osbourne further says that Ward didn’t discuss the matter with his bandmates – and things could have been different if he had. “He didn’t come clean and say, ‘I can’t cut this gig, but can we work something out, guys, where I’ll come on but with another drummer backing me up?’ Or, ‘I’ll come and play a few songs.’ That would have been cool.”

But that’s not to say the singer blames his old colleague. “I get where he’s coming from – his pride was hurt,” he reflects. “And I get it. I really do get it. The guy will always be a dear, dear friend and a brother to me.

“But he can’t be surprised that he didn’t get the gig. I’m not going to give Bill a hatchet job, but at the same time we haven’t got the patience to deal with it.”

Producer Rick Rubin recently explained why he wanted Ginger Baker to play drums for Sabbath, but that Wilk was also one of his suggestions. Sabbath tour the UK in December.

Hanneman mould was broken long ago

Jeff Hanneman of Slayer

Jeff Hanneman 1964~2013

Gary Holt has paid tribute to friend and colleague Jeff Hanneman, after standing in for the Slayer guitarist until his death on Thursday.

The Exodus axeman was called up in 2011 after Hanneman was bitten by a spider, leading to an attack of necrotising fasciitis that caused the loss of most of the flesh of his arm, and brought him close to death.

The Slayer co-founder suffered liver failure and passes way in hospital. He was 49.

Now Holt has released a statement, saying he’s “devastated” and that the news “hit me like a ton of bricks.”

He comments: “Jeff, it’s been an honour, my brother, to try my best to honour your songs best I could.

“There is only one Jeff Hanneman. All I ever could hope to do was play those songs you wrote with the conviction with which you played and wrote them. There is only one of you; that mould was broken long ago.

“My old friend, we had some amazing times on the greatest shows and tours I’ve ever done – Venom, Slayer, Exodus, anyone? – young and hungry thrashers out to lay waste to everything, the best time ever while doing it. Exactly why we all started playing in the first place.

“Much love and respect, and my deepest condolences to the Hanneman family and the whole Slayer family. Gone but never forgotten and always missed.”

Meanwhile, founding Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, who was recently dropped by the band over a contractual disagreement, has also reacted to his bandmate’s death. He says: “I’m deeply saddened, shocked and speechless. It’s difficult for me to write my feelings at this moment. My heart goes out to Kathy Hanneman.”

At Revolver’s Golden Gods awards on Thursday night, soon after the band had released the news, guitarist Kerry King called on a moment’s noise in Hanneman’s memory, rather than a traditional moment’s silence.

Video: Orchid – Wizard Of War

Ozzy-alike: Orchid’s Theo Mindell

Founded in 2007 in San Francisco, Orchid owe their sound to the grand masters of rock – Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and even Pink Floyd.

Orchid established their reputation early with the 2009 release of their first EP Through The Devil’s Doorway. Shortly after the band began work on a full-length album, Capricorn, which was released in 2011 by the small indie label The Church Within Records.

As a tasty appetizer for their upcoming second full-length The Mouths Of Madness Orchid released the Wizard Of War EP in February. The album itself is out via Nuclear Blast on April 26.

Dunno about you, but we reckon Orchid might just be too damn Sabbathy for their own good. Singer Theo Mindell has copped so many early Ozzy Osbourne moves, it wouldn’t surprise us if he receives a writ from Sharon any day now…

Sorry, we couldn’t resist this…
